Using A Cell Phone To Purchase Things From Vending Machines?

I heard somewhere that Japanese cell phones gives you the ability to purchase things from vending machines. How does this technology work? And will this technology ever come to the US?

We have it in australia. Basically you SMS a number on the vending machine and some central computer of the company tells the machine (over a phone or data line i presume) to give you a drink.
It’s cool. They then charge it to your mobile account (same as those adult/competition/horroscope lines do)

How it works is that you have an account which you transfer money onto the same as say a visa debit card and it is located within your sim card on your phone, they are using them in mcdonalds in japan so basically you trun your phone to Bluetooth and press accept payment and the transaction is settled, pretty cool eh! i would imagine that japan has every intention of selling it to the states
