I think that it depends on the type of vending machine. First of all, it is healthy to snack or have 5 small meals a day so your sugar doesn’t drop and so you don’t binge. Second, I have worked in a YMCA in a poor area that had 2 vending machines; 1 with milk, water, all natural juice and one that had organic snacks and granola, pita chips, etc. Are you going to get all of your nutrients and vitamins from snacks? No. But if you’re going to have a snack, having a healthier, lower in sugar one is more nutritious.

OMG NO they should not have vending machines in schools.
No wonder we are raising generations of fat porkers – someone has been telling them that they have to “Snack.” A snack is not something you have to eat every day. It is an occasional thing like a soda SHOULD be, and not eaten every day.
People – you will survive (and be healthier for it) if you don’t eat for 4-6 hours!
The only people who HAVE to have something to eat in between meals are diabetics.
There is nothing “healthy” about any food that can be put into a vending machine! Think about it – whatever food you put in there has to sit unrefrigerated FOR MONTHS if not longer – what “healthy” food qualifies for that? NONE!
Complaining about childhood obesity and then providing junk food at the same time has got to be some form of insanity.
There were generations of children who went to school, played sports, did after school activities and did not have access to a vending machine for junk food. And guess what – THEY SURVIVED!
Having a vending machine around simply reinforces the false idea that you should be eating! It is unhealthy to have them around. If the school district is making money on them – they are selling away your health for their bottom line!

When I was in high school (graduated 2002), we had two sets of vending machines. Each set had one for sodas and sugary juices and one for snacks like brownies, potato chips (things you find at a convenience store). I noticed a couple problems with this.
First, it was cheaper to eat from the vending machines. Kids would spend half as much to eat snacks instead of buying a regular lunch. A few reasons were: not having enough money to afford regular lunch, not wanting to spend more on lunch to save the excess and use it as allowance, not having enough time to get through the lunch line and eat before lunch was over. We had two lunch periods to divided a large school of students and there were usually students still in line with trays when the lunch bell would ring to dismiss. And these weren’t just students that slacked off in the hallways before they got to lunch. Kids are in a hurry to get to lunch even if they’re not in a hurry to get anywhere else.
Second, many students on athletic teams and those who have extracurricular activities DO rely on the vending machines. They COULD bring food from home but most don’t for whatever reason.
I think that vending machines could be a great idea as long as they promoted healthy choices. Having a vending machine for water, vitamin water or no sugar added juices, for example. The snack machine could carry whole grain products (like crackers and popcorn) or even fruits/veggies (the way that Burger King carries apple slices). If kids are hungry and just want something to munch on, they will choose healthy choices if that is what they’re offered. And truthfully, most people like healthy choices. But when do you ever see a convenience food that is a healthy choice? I think it’s time we changed that. It would keep people healthy and give food companies a reason to start creating and marketing healthy foods.

In grade school we had coke machines but no snack machines. I don’t remember a lot of people drinking cokes except after school.
In high school we had a coke machine and snack machine in the gym area. It had popcorn and crackers and junk like that in it. I don’t remember a lot of candy bars or anything. It also was never a problem. People bought stuff out of it when they were in gym and that was it.
No more than what would be ate out of a vending machine that is not contributing to the over weight problem of kids nor adults in this country. It’s an eating cycle they do all do every day. People just don’t eat healthy. And no, it’s not McDonald’s fault if you eat their food and have a weight problem or health problems.
We also had a little store in the vocational part of our high school with every candy bar imaginable.
Basically that’s all we had in it. People went before school and between classes and bought junk food. It was no big deal.

If they are healthy type snacks then yes. But 86 the idea of soda machines. Even juice has more concentrated sugars than your body really needs. The only truly healthy drink is water, fresh fruits and veggies won’t keep to well in a vending machine. The so called healthy snacks with the whole grains still contain a lot of fat and salt. Look at the packages many will give you 30% of your salt intake in a 1oz bag of chips. If you can find TRULY healthy snacks then go for it.

I think they are important. Especially for after school hours. When I played softball and was in marching band, I sometimes didn’t get home until 9 or 10pm. I relied on the vending machines for food and drink to hold me over until I got home to eat dinner. Sometimes, that was my dinner.

I was a catering manager in a school and vending machines were a nuisance as the kids were always trying foreign coins or pennies wrapped in foil.
We even had a kid who got his arm stuck up the chute trying to get a free can!
    My vote NO!!!!!

  9. Good Servant Says:

It’s ok as long as it has mostly healthy snack and drink item choices.
